The communication room is particularly useful with MPD patients. When a new alter has been identified who does not know the other alters or host, but is willing to begin communication, the patient can be taken to the communication room and shown a row of "video phones" or even one "video phone" with the instruction: "All you need to do is punch the name of (host or alter) into the telephone and listen and watch on the screen to see what she looks like. Can you see her? Let her know you are there and are interested in talking with her now. Any time you need to tell her something, all you need to do is punch in her name and you will be in communication with her." Gradually, as the amnestic barriers are broken down, and alters communicate and see each other directly, internal communication is facilitated in a fairly nonthreatening way.
